Johanna Mendelson-Forman's op-ed touches on a climate policy area known as 'Sustainable Development Policies and Measures', or SD-PAMs. SD-PAMs are policies that can be instituted by developing nations that allow them to meet their development goals without harming the global climate. Haiti is now uniquely positioned to participate in this rapidly evolving policy field: it has a large agrarian citizenship, a eastern neighbor eager for biofuels, and a consistent mandate from the international community to increase standard-of-living. If Haiti takes advantage of this opportunity, it may be able to strengthen its ravaged economy by helping a neighbor decrease its use of fossil fuels - which can only be good for an island poised to suffer from the adverse effects of climate change. Hey, I'm having problems
Hey, I'm having problems with your site in the Safari browser (the text is barely readable). I've tried increasing the font size from my browser but that didn't really help much. Any tips on what I should do? (Oh, and if it helps, I'm on Windows 7) - weight loss tips for kids
Thanks for taking the time
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful and beneficial to your readers.
what does sustainable environment mean?
This word sustainable means that keeping future forward using of any kind of resourses.
It is applicable on only non-renewable type of energy which cann't be renewed in the next 10-20yrs.
Non-renewable type of energy like coal ,petrol, any kind of fossil fuel that we use should have some limites so that our future commers should get the chance to use the fossil fuel.
For every fossil fuel their is a alternative rewnewable energy like for eg:-
1)for petrol - solar,electric,biofuel,water.
2)for coal - solar,electrical gadgets.
3)for disel - biodisel.
greetings rodrigo, my name
greetings rodrigo, my name is donato am a architecture student at the new jersey institute of technology. i work for a green design company and have experience with various solar enery systems. i'm very intersted in helping latin america acheive its independence from oil, and other energy sources harmful to us and the environment, i'm of dominican heritage, and would like to know a little more about your organization. sincerely thanx, donato

Hi. My name is Rodrigo, and I'm from Mexico. Some friends and I, some friends and I, are creating a group that focus in environmental protection and the sustainable development promotion. We are looking for international members. We'r not asking for money support, just people that whants to be part of something that can change our world, people minds, and the economical system to another one that could be sustainable for everyone.
Also, we are creating a consulting firm to generate economical resource to support the movement/ONG.
Of course we are young and just finished our BA so this is a great opportunity to obtain professional experience and do something for everyone in this planet.
PLEASE JOIN US, HELP US TO CHANGE PEOPLE MINDS. RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE PEOPLE WORKING WITH US IN SINGAPOUR, CANADA AND ARGENTINA. BE PART OF THIS.

I'm agree with the one who
I'm agree with the one who post about biofuel. I think that the elementary issue that can fix the accelerated global warming, is sel-sufficiency. Why? Because the massive goods production its the reason and the root of the problem.
Thats why, sustainable development talks about the local improve of programs as a massive structure of a enormous strategy to fix the actual situation.
Little things like, use organic waste to produce biogas and burning it to obtain electric energy (of course using generation plants), recycling, improve the water utilization and free-emissions technology development (not only high tech) can make the difference on this field.
is biofuel a solution ?
Today, one of the main issue deals with enviroment , more precisely with global warming. It is now for the world very important to preserve natual resources and prevent degradations . In short everybody is now focusing on saving our planet. In that context biofuel can be one of the solutions.
however, for a country such as haiti, where 80 % of the population is leaving with less than 2 dolars per day, personnaly I don't think it would be an opotunity for haiti to give priority to biofuels when million of haitian are hungry. In my opinion haiti should focus on national self-sufficiency rather than providing agricultural product for biofuel.
feel free to give me your opinon
Emission levels
Hi my question might be quite far from the topic of biofuels but I was just wondering if anyone knows if non-road (e.g. diesel engines) emission standards are in place here in Haiti? I am doing a research on CO emission. I found emission standards for diesel engines but it's for the US. Do we have such here in Haiti? I apologize for my ignorance...
About Exporting Biodiesel to the Dominican Republic
I agree that producing biodiesel and ethanol in Haiti would be great. It would create lots of jobs, help gain strong economic growth, meet local transportation demand, and potentially allow for a new export market in the country.
However, I don't know if the Dominican Republic would be the viable market, for two reasons. Before I give those two reasons, it's worth mentioning that Haiti can potentially produce both biodiesel and ethanol. The first reason is that the DR is also developing both of these fuels to meet local needs. Already, a Brazilian company will begin producing enough ethanol in 2009 to meet about 13% of domestic needs.
The other reason is that the DR is thinking of producing both to meet domestic needs and to export. Jatropha can also be grown in the DR, and there is much more land it in the DR. In addition, the country already has policies to promote these fuels.
Because of these reasons, Haiti's biodiesel/ethanol production will have to meet local demands and regional demands. Many regional island nations are pushing for carbon dioxide emission reductions, so exporting it regionally and internationally will probably be the best option.
