I'm agree with the one who post about biofuel. I think that the elementary issue that can fix the accelerated global warming, is sel-sufficiency. Why? Because the massive goods production its the reason and the root of the problem.
Thats why, sustainable development talks about the local improve of programs as a massive structure of a enormous strategy to fix the actual situation.
Little things like, use organic waste to produce biogas and burning it to obtain electric energy (of course using generation plants), recycling, improve the water utilization and free-emissions technology development (not only high tech) can make the difference on this field.

You can add something about biodigestor (anaerobic fermentation) and how his use can improve health and life quality in communities. What about recycling? I can send you information about it. Today, one of the main issue deals with enviroment , more precisely with global warming. It is now for the world very important to preserve natual resources and prevent degradations . In short everybody is now focusing on saving our planet. In that context biofuel can be one of the solutions.
however, for a country such as haiti, where 80 % of the population is leaving with less than 2 dolars per day, personnaly I don't think it would be an opotunity for haiti to give priority to biofuels when million of haitian are hungry. In my opinion haiti should focus on national self-sufficiency rather than providing agricultural product for biofuel.

i think that some information related to production of bio diesal should also be added

what is that bean that has half it's weight in oil? it's easily grown and makes an excellent source of food and biofuel, would cause a few emission problems tho..

sustainable development is something which is used with lots of care
actually resources have to be sustatianbly used so that the resources do get get finished and thus saving them for the future generations.
by doing this we mean that it is -sustainable development.
it is implemented so by-
(1) using it properly
(2) not wasting it
(3) saving it for future generations

Hi my question might be quite far from the topic of biofuels but I was just wondering if anyone knows if non-road (e.g. diesel engines) emission standards are in place here in Haiti? I am doing a research on CO emission. I found emission standards for diesel engines but it's for the US. Do we have such here in Haiti? I apologize for my ignorance...

I am a long time professional recycler of metals and plastics. Other than degradation by UV/sunlight I was unaware that normal polyethylene can be biodegraded. We currently crack polyethylene in the absence of oxygen and reburn the fume as a heat and power source. Part of this heat is then used to keep the process going. The byproducts are CO2 and water and aside from pigments the process is environmentally sound and yields about 30,000 BTUs per kg of PE Waste. Much faster than biodgradation and an excellent fuel.

I agree that producing biodiesel and ethanol in Haiti would be great. It would create lots of jobs, help gain strong economic growth, meet local transportation demand, and potentially allow for a new export market in the country.

However, I don't know if the Dominican Republic would be the viable market, for two reasons. Before I give those two reasons, it's worth mentioning that Haiti can potentially produce both biodiesel and ethanol. The first reason is that the DR is also developing both of these fuels to meet local needs. Already, a Brazilian company will begin producing enough ethanol in 2009 to meet about 13% of domestic needs.

The other reason is that the DR is thinking of producing both to meet domestic needs and to export. Jatropha can also be grown in the DR, and there is much more land it in the DR. In addition, the country already has policies to promote these fuels.

Because of these reasons, Haiti's biodiesel/ethanol production will have to meet local demands and regional demands. Many regional island nations are pushing for carbon dioxide emission reductions, so exporting it regionally and internationally will probably be the best option.
