Water Well Rehabilitation in Leogane

By Weblog on Friday, December 16, 2005.

Haitian Well The Haiti Water Well Rehabilitation Project - a joint effort between the Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti (CNP) and Living Water International (LWI) - moved forward in 2005 with the achievement of several milestones. First, twelve (12) wells have been repaired thus far in 2005 bringing the total number of wells put back into service since the project’s inception to fifteen (15). Second, CNP/LWI has recently contracted the services of local area residents to perform recent repairs. The passing of these two milestones restores potable water to 15 communities and provides intermittent, but regular, jobs for our local contractors.

CNP hosted two LWI well repair teams in February and May 2005; and provided support to local contractors, Mr. Albert Point du Jour and Mr. Gerard Pinchieve, in August and October 2005. Albert is well known to the CNP having once worked for the program and who now serves as facilities manager for Hôpital Sainte Croix, Leogane. Gerard is the former drilling manager for UNICEF when these area wells were initially drilled. These two gentlemen will bring vast technical skills to the project enabling us to better execute and to reach more communities with wells in disrepair.

The Water Well Rehabilitation project was initiated in 2003 with the gathering of local well information by current CNP Executive Director, Cathy Speraw Dorvil, and members of her nutrition staff. To date CNP/LWI has hosted 5 LWI teams to Leogane. Plans are to contract with Albert and Gerard in January for the repair of three (3) more wells and to re-initiate LWI mission team trips in 2006. The Haiti Water Well Rehabilitation program is managed by CNP board member, Jack C. Vaughn.
