Giving and Receiving

Graham, Appreciate your thoughts on this and I agree with you completely that people should know where the money is going. Unfortunately, monitoring and evaluation and the "faith based approach" are often not compatible. There are numerous outside evaluations of traditional NGOs. Charity Navigator is a pretty good one. Perhaps there should be one for faith based NGOs. Not the large ones, but the small mom and pop operations of which Haiti has so many... Better yet, I think that missionaries should be required to take part in an orientation/cultural sensitivity training course for one week before beginning their duties. This would be for the long-timers. The reality is that so many of these missionaries are the short term type, who come in for one week and then leave. I wonder if these missionaries (diaspora aside) are the majority of tourists visiting Haiti? I was in the airport and saw a group of them wearing "Survivor Haiti" t-shirts. True that Haitians are survivors par excellence but this is disrepctful. I know I wouldnt like it if tourists started wearing "survivor Washdington DC" t-shirts. Although given recent crime trends, may be approrpiate. Bryan
