During the past 60 hours over 20 Haitian children in Port-au-Prince received some of the best medical care from Dr. John Ragheb and his visiting team from Miami Children’s Hospital. Pediatric Neurosurgeons Dr. Ragheb and Dr. Bhatia, also of Miami Children’s accompanied by a 7th year resident started performing surgery on children with Hydrocephalus just 3 hours after landing in Haiti this past Sunday. With the post-op and outreach support of Healing Hands Haiti and Project Medishare and the logistical support of Norwich Mission House Dr. Ragheb’s team of 19 performed third vetriculostomy surgeries, a procedure with an 80% success rate on most of the children they saw. This Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., the Tallahassee Community College will host a fund-raiser for Project Medishare. Project Medishare is an organization dedicated to improving the health of the Haitian people by re-establishing the health infrastructure in several communities and facilities throughout Haiti.
The event will feature a screening of "There Once Was a Country," a documentary about Haiti narrated by Maya Angelou, food, drinks and cultural dance by the Tallahassee Community College’s Haitian Culture Club.

Haiti is now at a critical point with respects to its socioeconomic, political and health conditions. Each of these aspects are intricately woven with one another, as in many nations, however the nature of Haiti's situation is so dependent on the successful resilience of each of these factors. There is optimism for Haiti's reemergence from decades of anguish, and I witnessed tangible progress from the field during my week-long medical mission organized jointly by The George Washington University School of Medicine and Project Medishare.

Hydrocephalus is a congenital disease that affects 2 out of every 1000 births. In most places, shortly after birth, a somewhat simple operation allows a child a greater chance at a normal life. Read more »
