Chavez continues in his quest to become Santa Claus

Chavez Say what you will about Chavez and his band of socialist rebel-rousers, but whether it’s handing out fuel subsidies to London or, oh who are we kidding, handing out fuel subsidies to whoever will take them, the Venezuelan government does like to hand out some serious donations.

This week they announced the creation of a $20 million (USD) humanitarian relief fund for Haiti. The fund, which is set up in conjunction with the Economic and Social Development Bank (Bandes) will offer funds to address priority areas such as “health, education, electricity, drinking water, and food security”. While finding a priority area in Haiti on which to spend $20 million is akin to throwing a rock into the ocean hoping to hit water. As we say in the development biz, ‘every little bit helps’.

Now, while we all love to see headlines promoting another humanitarian fund set up for Haiti, we must also keep in mind the difference between pledged funds and funds that are signed, sealed and delivered. Nine times out of ten the dollar amounts you hear quoted in these announcements (someone please prove me wrong) are pledged amounts. Anyone in the field will tell you that pledged amounts are about as good as a half-assed military coup, not worth the paper there printed on.

My aim here is not to come across as pessimistic or ungrateful, obviously any pledged amounts are better than no pledge, but pressure must be placed on any organization that commits to certain levels of aid to follow through on that obligation. So please, write a letter to the Venezuelan government thanking them for their commitment to helping Haiti, but also implore them fully live up to their responsibilities. I hope we get to a point where pledged funds are the same as received funds (and I wouldn’t be surprised if Venezuela proved me wrong). Heaven knows the countries, such as Haiti, that are the recipients of these pledges are dying for the same thing.

I JUST READ YOUR POST ON

I JUST READ YOUR POST ON HAITI INNOVATION ABOUT THE INTEREST TO DO SOME VOLUNTEER WORK IN A HAITI SAFELY. THE FEELING IS MUTUAL :-)

FIRST, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST TO HELP IN HAITI!

I LIVE IN THE US-NEW YORK. I AM JUST IN THE DEBUT OF A PROJECT TO FACILITATE BASIC HUMAN NEEDS AND EDUCATION FOR POOREST CHILDREN AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES SO THE ADULTS CAN CARE BETTER FOR THEIR FAMILY AND REALIZE DREAMS OF SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

________________________
THE FIRST ONE WILL BE IN CAP-HAITEN. I WAS THERE SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, THE REGION IS VERY NICE AND CALM. I'M NOT FROM THERE BUT THIS MATTER'S LESS.... WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT I/ WE HAVE PEOPLE IN OUR CIRCLE THAT WE CAN TRUST AND THAT SHARE THE DRIVE, THE DESIRE AND GENUINENESS TO BRING COMMUNITY AND CARE TOGETHER FOR CHILDREN!
__________________________
THE FOUNDATION IS CALLED AMI SOLEIL. WEB SITE IS PENDING. WE, TAKE ZERO $PAY SO 100% GOES TO PROJECTS EXECUTION. WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THE HELP GETS EXECUTED AND THE RIGHT WAY SO THOSE CHILDREN HAVE A REAL CHANCE TO ESCAPE THE DEAD END POVERTY IN HAITI AND TO BECOME BETTER LEADERS.

MY UNCLE HAS A DESCENT HOME THERE ( SO YOU WOULD HAVE A PLACE TO STAY UNTIL THE FOUNDATION HAS ITS OWN SPACE FOR GUEST VOLUNTEERS, IN 2009 ) AND HELP S A LOT OF PEOPLE IN HIS AREA BY CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND SO ON. AS A CIVIL ENGINEER HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN BUILDING ROADS, BOAT MARINAS BUT HAVE BEEN FOCUSING ON SOME VACATION HOMES- BUNGALOWS PROJECTS FOR SOME EUROPEANS THAT STILL LOVES THAT CORNER SECRET HIDEAWAY; WHICH IS ALMOST VIRGIN, WITH EXOTIC TREES AND A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE OCEAN .

I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU AND ALL INTERESTED PARTIES AND DISCUSS THE TOPIC OF HELPING IN HAITI SAFELY AND HAVE SOME FUN DISCOVERING PLACES AND LEARNING FROM THEM, IN THE PROCESS.

YOURS,

NADIA :-)

Volunteering in Haiti

In terms of having an impact to an organization, it may be best to send money. Any of our partners would benefit from your financial support. But in terms of experiencing the country, developing a connection, and being able to better articulate its needs, go there. Maybe you could work with an orphanage such as St. Josephs in Port au Prince. You can also stay there, so you are supporting the activity and learning about the country at the same time. If you have some extra time, travel around a bit, spend some money, support the economy. In terms of safety, you may feel more comfortable going with others your first time. Depends on you.

you sound very promising are

Pride is a sin. We should not

Pride is a sin. We should not be so proud as to not accept the help of those who would offer it. By separating ourselves from others we make it harder for others to provide the empathy and support we need. No man, or country can exist in isolation. Dependence on other countries is a fact realized by the most powerful countries in the world. We are one world; one community; one people all in favor of basic human rights and securities. Abandon your pride because it will not serve you or your country.

Let Just Pray

I hope Chavez will honor his pledge, because Haiti has enough of those broken promises. Compliment to the creator of this website. Nicely done.

Congrats!

Sak Pase! I would like to compliment the person or the group of people behind this website, it's great. I think your work is commendable and honorable. I never imagine there was such site out there dedicated to Haiti and for Haitians. I admire everything though we are very often small and underbudgeted, but we come out clean and professional. Thumbs up guys!!!

Update on the Chavez Visit

Reports are stating that Preval had planned a full days worth of events for Chavez. However, Chavez arrived four hours late, leaving Preval at the airport waiting. This greatly reduced the schedule of what they were able to accomplish. Then Chavez left late, making Preval wait at the airport. My experience has been that, in Haiti, schedules are only suggestions.

On behalf of the Association

On behalf of the Association of Scottish Stillwater Fisheries A.S.S.F. I find it shameful that we are brought in to this debate. However being a Scot I never run from a fight. And I say damn that Chavez better give those Tahitians his oily pride and dignity however they chose to take it! If not me and my kilted band of brothers will happily do it to them.

Haiti....

At least we out of all people knows theat the president CHavez, will, to a certain degree honor any promess made to the people of Haiti. Unlike those who pledged funding to many of our problems and ask that our our people to bind over and take it in the a.s.s. F..... all of them! Look what we have become, a nation that is so full of life, and this is how low we got. I thank that we have to take a look at what put us into this situation and fix it as soon as we can. No amount of money (bis) will change the contry. We must, all "Haitien" must take back our pride and face our own future ourselves. Put it this way no one can love you or care about you more than you do. It is a lay when they whant us to beleive the can solve our problems. insted, they want whatever is left in us: pride and dignity. Don't let them take these away from us. These are the things that makes us who we are. The only chance to a better future. Remember that we are what we are... "haiti for life". "libete ou lanmo"
