port salutI absolutely reject tourism in Haiti, unless I’m the tourist. Yes it’s a selfish position but I don’t want anyone else enjoying the pristine beaches and secluded waters of Haiti’s coastline. Honestly and realistically that probably won’t be an issue in Haiti for years and years to come. But for the few daring travelers that do venture to Haiti I have a new find on the south west coast in the south department. Well, Port-Salut isn’t new to anyone who has spent enough time in Haiti however the Port-Salut Beach House Bar and Grill or Kay Nadine is new and it’s the type of place every low budget high quality “roughing it” traveler is looking for.

PSBHBG or Kay Nadine for short is a small 5 room joint perched on a rock ledge overlooking the crisp Caribbean sea, which you can fall right into directly from the back yard of the beach house and swim for hours in its buoyant waters. All rooms have plenty of lighting when the thick wooden shuttered windows are swung open and a touch of Haiti painted or hung somewhere on the walls, as well as mosquito netting, which wasn’t needed during our stay. The place is clean and bathroom amenities are surprisingly functioning. The upstairs dining room, bar and hammock haven is perfectly laid out with a high thatched roof, plenty of breeze and 180 degree views. You can spend most of your day on the top floor and never feel guilty about not having gone to the beach. As for the food, well the toughest part is choosing between large fish yellow tail snapper or lobster which were certainly caught that morning or even better that afternoon. And the preparation is a pleasant surprise of Haitian spice. The white sandy beach covered in coconut trees is just a 5 minute walk down the road past the pleasant homes and smiles of the Haitian fishing families that still live her. And for the “overly ambitious”, this is a lazy beach atmosphere, there are 2 beautiful cascades just a few minutes hike outside of town. The staff, though just learning the trade is kind, courteous and on the ball. Anything we asked for we received.

Above, as I skeptically admonish Haiti’s capacity to reign in tourists until years and years from now at present there are actually 2 or 3 domestic flights a day from Port-au-Prince to Les Cayes. So you can find yourself in Les Cayes from the capital in just 48 minutes. From there on Les Cayes to Port-Salut is just a 30 minute drive on a perfectly paved road. So eventually when people realize that expensive all inclusive resorts are the same on every island, are boring, and want to find something different, they should find the Port-Salut Beach House Bar and Grill.

I haven't been in Haiti

I haven't been in Haiti before, but would like to be there to see their wonderful places. Actually, I do believe that there are still places around us that have potential to increase a country's tourism. Like most probably this place.

This really sounds like a

This really sounds like a wonderful place to visit, or used to be before this terrible tragedy of the earthquake two weeks ago. It is amazing to see the photos of what it looked like before and after the devestation.

Cascades?

Where are the cascades you speak of being only a few minutes hike away? No one there seemed to know. If you are talking about the ones by Camp Perrin, it is a couple hours drive, and the water is diverted frequently for hyrdo-electric (as we found out by going there to swim).

Also, what's north of Port Salut? any isolated beaches along this coast?

Pleasant stay

We got back home (Verrettes, Haiti) last night after spending a few days in Port Salut. As we had eight people (family and employees) we chose to stay at this place. $5 a night for the hotel. Dinner of lobster, fish, or chicken was excellent. Only complaints - no curtain on the shower stall, shower stall floor is rock and dirt, and meals were lacking in quantity - especially breakfast. Found ourselves turning to snacks after a meal.

We all so enjoyed our stay and look forward to going back. If going with a group we will stay there again, but if going with just my wife, we would stay elsewhere.

If going, realize that this place is rustic and for those on tight budgets.

Thanks Nadine, Juliet, and Sopia! Got home and was craving lobster even after having it for three nights in a row!

Tom, Ficilta and the gang,

One month stay at Port Salut Beach House Bar and Grill

I just got back from a 4 week stay at this beach house and had a WONDERFUL time. I don't have one single complaint. IF YOU WANT A REALLY FUN, CHEAP, FANTASTIC VACATION, GO TO PORT SALUT BEACH HOUSE! I absolutely loved it. A months worth of sun and fun for under a thousand bucks including airfare. Can't beat it.

I flew into Port Au Prince and stayed one night before taking a tap tap to Port Salut. It was very easy. Other options are to hire a car in PAP although I don't reccommend it if you haven't driven in Haiti before. Otherwise you can book a flight from PAP to Les Cayes before you arrive in Haiti and take a taxi from the main airport to the smaller one.

The Beach House itself is beautiful with an awesome view from upstairs. I spent most of my time upstairs reading looking at the ocean. The food is fantastic and the cold beer is cheap! It's really got something for everyone. You can take a quick walk to the beautiful beach or just walk around the little town. I made lots of friends and fell in love with all the kids that hang out around the beach house sometimes. Internet is also easy to find in Port Salut and there's several fun options for partying at night.

If you don't speak French or Creole, ask Nadine to call her friend Roberson who is fluent in English. He also has a friend Staco who has a car if you need to hire one to get around. They took us all the way to Jacmel and then PAP and were a blast to hang out with.

The woman who runs the place, Nadine, and her niece Juliet do absolutely everything they can to make sure you are taken care of. Haiti is very easy to get around and the people try very hard to help you out with whatever you need. All in all I had a fantastic experience and can't wait to go back!

If there were worms don't go

If there were worms don't go next time. We don't need negative vibe.

they weren't worm, they are tritris!!!

FYI, in Haiti we spice up our rice with tiny itsy bitsy fish found with rivers, they are called TRITRI. they might look like little worms but they are not! For the ignorants of haitian culture, this may come as a disgusting surprise but there is nothing wrong with it. Next time why don't you ask questions instead of making assumptions.

place sucks. we ate there

place sucks. we ate there and there were worms in the rice! Worms!!!

Port Salut to Coteaux et les Anglais

Port Salut along to Roche a Bateaux, Coteaux,Port-au-Piment on to Les Anglais is the coming (and already established) "zone touristique" d'Haiti for Haitiens wanting to enrich their national interest. Having spent weeks roaming along this coastline, my extreme concern is "us" and what we'll eventually do to towards "modernizing" this absolutely shockingly beautiful area into a current day level of exploitation and polution. When visiting this coastline and the towns along the way please do all that you may to be certain that your plastic, your waste materials are disposed of correcly. Bluntly put, please don't bring "plastic" here unless you remove it. Some of the most beautiful (were) areas of Haiti have been polluted to the point of suffocation.
Port Salut Beach House, also Le RELAIS DES BOUCANIERS, (ask for Rosemary) are marvellous places to rest your mind and soul.
Two more years and I will be there also! Come to see me in 2011, December, at "Rien a Faire" or as is said "Nothing-To-Do", another wonderful place to be on Haiti's south-west coast across from Jamaica.
Port Salut and Haiti might just save your sanity, your marriage (either), your life!
Any of you who read this and may be linked to "recycling" and/or the engineering of "contained sanitary systems" might study this area or consult directly with coteaux@stis.net for the input of ideas that may be applied towards the protection this rural seaside wonderland.
The air-link to Les Cayes is easy from P-au-P, and a local car rental there may be had by calling ahead to "New Version CAr Rental" c/o Fredly Jn Pierre or Jospic Charles,(011) 509-483-9435, or 509-485-6628 located right at the Cayes airport.
From there it is about 35 minutes over the paved higheay to Port-Salut. The paved road is now reportedly all the way along to Coteaux.
Enjoy your exploration, and protect this magnificent area please!

Steer clear unless you like pretty girls

Steer clear of this place and go directly to either Calico or Auberge du Rayon Vert. They're either right on or within walking distance of the beach. I do have to say that Nadine is a hottie. She could be a model--no kidding--like Tyra Banks hot. I accidentally saw her showering from the second floor. Amazing body.

Port Salut

I have photos of my visit to Port Salut some 20 years ago. It was a unique place that I will never forget. Can you come directly to Port Salut via boat, or are visitors still required to enter the country only at PAP?

By the way, yes. I agree with the article above. Don't bother going to Port Salut. Go to a Club Med somewhere instead.

Where were these beach cabins

Where were these beach cabins located exactly? I am the owner of the Port Salut Beach House Bar & Grill and am generally very familiar with the area.

I'm going there in april. Could you tell me where I reserve the flight from Port Au Princ to Les Cayes and back to Port Au Prince. Is it possible to reserve it from airport in Port Au Prince. I mean is there seats if you reserve in same day. Other question is: which is the best vehicle to travel from Les Cayes to Port Salut?

ah, port-salut

Having grown up in Haiti, I have very many wonderful memories of P-S. Thanks for the update.

Does anyone know if the beach

Does anyone know if the beach cabins that we used to go to in Port Salut are still operating. That was a wonderful beach, great food. Time and Susan know it well since it was the start of their romance. I was there! Rich
