According to the website, the project will target the 1 million plus Haitian Americans living in the United States. Ideally, NK would offer retirement and vacation homes to 20,000 to 30,000 families. Société Générale de Développement (SOGEDEV) is a private corporation that contracted with the Government of Haiti in April of this year to develop the land for regional economic development. In the first three years, NK expects to create 600,000 man-days of work per year, not including the jobs created by developers participating in this project. This in addition to a local service economy created in the general area of Nouveau Kiskeya to support contractors and laborers. Concerns about flying into Port-au-Prince will be addressed by a new international airport being constructed on the property. This is a wonderful step towards reforming Haiti’s tourism economy; however, I am concerned by what potential job hunters may inflict upon the local habitats and ecosystems.
If this project hopes to succeed at creating a haven for travelers, something will need to be done to not only create jobs for the deluge of workers that will descend upon NK, but also something to preserve the natural habitat that tourists will want and expect to find. This also raises concerns with me regarding fish habitat and the propensity to over harvest fish stocks in Haiti. Not just a fancy locale must NK bring, but also a cultural change in the way that Haitians treat the resources of the area. Certainly, we hope that the old axiom, if you build it, they will come materializes (and as NK has applied to the Haitian Government for Free Zone status, I think they are well on their way). I also hope that proactive steps are taken to protect natural resources so that tourists continue to come decades from now. To learn more about Nouveau Kiskeya, click here. |

Property investment risk
Haiti faces political problems. Therefore, property investment in the country should be considered risky. If you're a foreigner who wants to invest in properties, you might consider regions that are relatively stable politically such as the Singapore Property market.
On the flip side, the axiom that High Risk = High Gains holds true. So that may be a reason to consider for investing in Haiti.
Political Unrest
I also think that Haiti is a wonderful place but it really was not long ago that it was an unsafe place to be and there is also the global warming issue making weather in that area far more unpredictable. It still however is on my list of possibles for retirement.
investment property
Nice thought! It is superb to think more than to the others.
Best of luck for making your dream come true!
Land Development
Its good that the land development project will create many jobs and help stimulate the economy.
Yeah, not enough is done for
Yeah, not enough is done for the workers and funding and energy always goes elsewhere. There are so many factors to consider in a project such as this that some aspects do get left behind a little.
Property investment potential of Port Au Prince
Incredible coincidence it must be, but my partner and I also stayed in a beautiful house in the mountains looking out over Port au Prince last August.
We live and work in New Zealand and never realised the sheer beauty of Haiti until we happened to be invited there by friends.
It is idyllic and yet sad at the same time to think of the struggle the people of this country have had to endure.
I am wondering what the property investment potential is for a place like Port Au Prince - if not now, perhaps in the future?
In the midst of a national
In the midst of a national situation that is violent and chaotic, it is indeed refreshing and stimulating to see how Beyond Borders’ small but vibrant alternative to the authoritarian schooling and leadership is taking shape in Haiti.

Saw it first hand
I have just returned from a stay at Noveau Kiskeya. I went to the mountains outside of Jean Rabel to a local church where we held services. On my stop over, Robert Ulysse and his wife Rose, hosted us at the Noveau Kiskeya property. One night, sitting in his office, He shared his vision along with some great hot tea. Over the next three days, I saw first hand how the local Haitians were being put to work, how they had their own hands and minds involved in the vision to develop a "new Haiti", and how hope was being restored in that region. Trust me when I say that I firmly believe no one loves Haiti more than Robert Ulysse. He has no plans for a Mcdonalds and Marriott on every corner. Robert speaks with passion and great vision about the place where he grew up literally herding sheep. Wise land use, economic empowerment, and good stewardship are not just watchwords but very real principles there. Robert is the right man, in the right place, for right now.
Two minds
I'm always in two minds whenever I hear of a new location which is being converted into a tourist paradise.
On the one hand I know how amazing the revenue can be for lifting an area or a whole country out of a really horrid economy and bringing prosperity to those previously poor.
On the other hand, it is sad to see another area taken from it's natural, untouched state and built up into the Western idea of paradise - hotels, retirement homes, pools, beaches, jetskis, hamburger restaurants etc etc.
I just hope this brings Haiti more benefits than pain.

Beaches and great scenery
Beaches and great scenery are always a draw, but considering that not all that long ago it wasn't too safe there, I wonder if that will have an impact on home sales to Haitan Americans? Granted the country has stablized a lot. And if the price is right, it may be an enticement that some can't resist. IF things continue to go well, they may become a great investment opportunity.
