We get quite a few emails from young people with a week or two off of school who would like to volunteer in Haiti. Without knowing Kreyol or having special skills, opportunities are somewhat limited but they are out there.  Through volunteering you can learn about the country, its culture, and develop an awareness of the developmental challenges, and just as important, how to addresss them. When you come back, that's when the hard work starts.  You may well find that you can do more for Haiti stateside.

Rotary in Haiti/Haitians in Rotary

So I've been thinking about joining Rotary Club.  Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders interested in humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards, and promoting peace and goodwill around the world.  There are about 1.2 million Rotarians belonging to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs in 166 countries.  There are plenty of programs financed by Rotary International, but are there Haitian Rotary Clubs?  Turns out that there are.

Ashoka: Investing in Social Entrepeneurs

I attended an interesting presentation today by Ashoka, an organization that supports individuals who apply their entrepeneurial skills to solve urgent social problems.  Since 1981, the organization has supported over 1800 entrepeneurs by providing them with stipends so they can focus on their social endeavor full time, receive professional support, and access to a wide network of mentors from sixty different countries who can provide guidance and feedback.   Read more »

Manzi Dayik Performing at HELP Auction in NYCI would like to introduce myself as the new Director of Development at the Haitian Education and Leadership Program; I’m pleased to have met some of you at the Haitian art auction in New York last month. If you were not’t able to join us, you can get a flavor of the event by viewing the HaitianXchange video. You’ll see some of the performances that captivated our 150 guests, including the dulcet tones of Manze Dayila and a special appearance by the dance and drumming troupe Ayiti Dans Ansam’m. The New Year is a special time in Haiti.  The houses are re-painted, the soup joumou is cooked, and the church services run even longer than normal.   It is a holiday of hope.  With that in mind, Haiti Innovation hopes that you and your families will have a  healthy and happy holiday season.

Last week I received a letter from a relatively large, international NGO. The letter, which was quite hefty, contained a pamphlet describing the work that the NGO was currently doing, a letter from the organization, a monthly newsletter and finally a donation card with a self addressed envelope. The first question that went through my mind was “how much did all of this cost?”
