As this year comes to a close, it is only natural to ask if Haiti is better off this year than last. In many regards, the answer is yes. However, while these are all encouraging signs, progress to the fast majority of Haitians is incremental if not nonexistent. Read more »

This title is taken from a book about the relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, two radically different countries that share the same island. Their relationship is extremely poor, fueled by paranoia on both sides. Dominican treatment of Haitians ranges from callous to positively inhumane. Haitians continue to flock to the Dominican Republic to work in the cane fields, construction, and a variety of other jobs that Dominicans do not want....at least not at the rate Haitians are paid. Haiti undoubtedly has one of the most compelling histories of the Western Hemisphere. Haiti was the first free black republic, second only to the United States. Haitian troops fought in the American Revolution. Though its problems are many and severe, Haiti's history enriches the western hemisphere.

The Haiti Water Well Rehabilitation Project - a joint effort between the Children’s Nutrition Program of Haiti (CNP) and Living Water International (LWI) - moved forward in 2005 with the achievement of several milestones. First, twelve (12) wells have been repaired thus far in 2005 bringing the total number of wells put back into service since the project’s inception to fifteen (15). Second, CNP/LWI has recently contracted the services of local area residents to perform recent repairs. There are few places in Haiti where you can see trees that are a hundred years old but many places where you can see the environment eroding right under your feet. By contrast there are many places in Haiti were children linger around without a thing to do and those children born into a country that depends on agricultural production to survive have no knowledge of the earth surrounding them outside that of the Port-au-Prince slums they live in. (Try google-ing “Haiti” or “MINUSTAH”). Read more »

In an article posted today by the Economist Intelligence Unit, they reported on a World Bank analysis of regional customs houses in Latin America and the Caribbean. What they came up with was shocking, but not unexpected. According to the article, the report (which I have been unsuccessful finding) concludes that Haiti's customs houses are at the bottom of the list for efficiency. Read more »
