Jean Juste Asks for Patience

By Robert Miller on Thursday, February 2, 2006.

Jean-Juste in Miami With two security guards posted outside of his room, I was able to visit Father Gérard Jean-Juste today at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He had recently undergone a biopsy on his neck, where a large growth had emerged in recent weeks while he was imprisoned in Pacot, Haiti.

After having undergone a seven hour surgery, Father Jean-Juste was surprisingly energetic and lucid. Before I could stop him he stood up to greet me. He said that he was feeling much better than he had in some time.

With regard to the election, Father Jean-Juste asked that everyone participate in Haiti’s democracy and to vote on February 7th; whenever possible, that vwazen yo, kole zepol and help friends and neighbors to poling stations who otherwise could not make it. He asked that the Haitian people reconcile their differences for a day, and to be positive about the electoral process. His last request was for everyone to be patient with the results, as they will take time to come from all of the departments.

Tomorrow morning, I leave for Port, first thing. I hope to have internet in the evenings at the Norwich Mission House. I will do my best otherwise.
